"...devo represented an attitude,
a point of view,
a philosophy
it was combining film-making and theatrics
and cutting-edge kind of synthesizers and rock beats all rolled into one big performance
with a lifestyle message behind it,
which was, basically,
--to beware of illegitimate authority and think for yourself"
"...built into devo is the comment on how society works and how people see things different ways and there is no one explanation of reality and that people do not share one logical idea of reality"
"whip it" lyrics.....
"crack that whip
give the past the slip
step on a crack
break your momma's back
when a problem comes along
you must whip it
before the cream sits out too long
you must whip it
when something's going wrong
you must whip it
now whip it
into shape
shape it up
get straight
go forward
move ahead
try to detect it
it's not too late
to whip it
whip it good
when a good time turns around
you must whip it
you will never live it down
unless you whip it
no one gets their way
until they whip it
i say whip it
whip it good"
what the song "means".......

Devo was a breaking edge early "new wave" band. So were The Cars and a bunch of other bands. They just sang about freaky stuff that made no sense, but it was new and cool. Who cared what they were "whipping". lol

Don't read too much into it....
It was just another non-sense bunch of 80's weirdo music.
That song was about as socially redeeming as "Pac-man Fever"
