& what is the importance of the two-party system to this electoral college?

It is a group of people selected by each state to select the President. There is one member for each congressman and senator. The members are usually selected in the election for President. Depending on the laws in the state the state winner may get all the votes or just the percentage based on the vote. They all go to Washington and vote on Dec 20, I believe. They are picked by the political parties and are supposed to vote for their candidate.

They decide who will become president.

They are not dependent upon the 2-party system.

When you vote for president you are not really voting for the president, you are voting for the party to select the slate of electors. In December the electors assemble and vote for president. If there is no majority winner it goes to the House of Representatives.
