It depends on whose society you're referring to. It's great for China's society. I'm sure Walmart provides a lot of jobs over there. For our society, it's not so great. They are working on doing away with as much competition as possible. Many small to medium sized businesses have been put out of business by Walmart all across the country. Walmart recently tried to buy out Big Lots. Their strategy is obviously this: produce as low a quality merchandise as the market will tolerate, interfere with the production within existing supposedly independent manufacturing companies to accomodate this (if they don't, they don't get to distribute using Walmart and they go out of business), drive the competition out of business or buy them out, and once these things are accomplished, their prices will go sky-high.

there is much debate! in China and some other places they created a lot of jobs and its all good there. here the effects maybe not so good.
also moving to a Corporate America. less individual businesses has a lot of people scared. and the little guys and gals cant compete with cheap foreign goods and cheap foreign labor.
they do some good charitable work i heard. there was a big fight over medical benefits and i think they do give them to full time employed now .
reality is the corporation stores are it now. and republicans are in full support.supporting big business from the top for awhile.

the answer depends a lot on the political view of the person your asking. If the person believes that we should be striving to a more capitalist society with an eventual laissex-faire capitalism then yes walmart is good. these people point out that walmart creates jobs and supports the local economy. Socialist minded folks would try to point out the exploitation of walmart both to US workers and the chinese (oversourcing). one thing is for sure walmart sells low quality items but not necessarily to low quality people.

Seems as though those who don't use the facilities talk the loudest... I have yet to hear of an employee expressing dissatisfaction with the organization..They offer their employees benefits most businesses don't. It seems to be enough to satisfy them, as they stay there for years..
The story of the Chicago episode should be enough to convince anyone of the value of these stores...Chicago turns out to be the loser as they get no tax money from Walmart. The surrounding communities do.. plus, they have revived the communities, by offering jobs.
That dollar for dollar investment in the company is not a bad deal either.. Shares are offered and utilized by most.
Dems sure hate success, don't they?

I know it has contibuted to the demise of small town, downtown shopping areas. My area no longer has independent grocers, pharmacies, variety stores or clothing stores. It is not all Wal-Mart but they, as well as other large chains, played a large part of its demise.

I think Wal-Mart sucks the life out of a community...I don't shop there....ever.
Now they want to get rid of their employees who they feel make too much money.

It enables people to shop for needed and un-needed items. It is enjoyable to shop. So yeah, it is good for society. It is an addiction to go there for some. That is bad. It is fun for some. That is good. It is convenient for some. That is good. The quality of stuff is okay and the prices are okay in our neighborhood. So that is good too.

As with almost every thing there are good points and bad ones.
They do offer lower prices.
But they don't pay a prevailing wage.
But then is being a cashier a career choice?
