What is a good program (or method) to send a 500MB computer file from across the U.S. without it taking a day to complete the transfer? AOL Instant Messenger takes 13 hours to transfer...that's a long time!

Preferably a FREE method, thank you.

If you have a high-speed Internet connection, you can upload the file to a public FTP site and the party on the other end can download it from there. That will be somewhat faster than with an IM interface.

But the bottleneck is going to be your Internet access speed. And with ADSL and most cable access, upload speed is far slower than download speed.

Sorry.

Unfortunately, the speed of your transmission is not determined by the protocol you use to send the file. It's determined by your connection speed. If you use a dial-up (telephone) connection to the Internet, then your transfer rate will be low regardless if you use AIM or not.

Probably the best thing you could do is find a friend who has high-speed Internet... or maybe even a coffee shop that has laptops you can use. Burn the 500MB file to a CD and transfer it that way. However, if the recipient is also using a dial-up connection, he won't be able to receive the file any faster... and you'll be in the same boat.

There is a tool you can download called "Get Right". It allows you to transfer files, pause the transfer, and resume them later. Likewise, if one of you has a connection problem and drops, Get Right will pick up were you left off when you reconnect. You can find it by going to http://www.download.com/GetRight/3000-2071_4-10585553.html?tag=lst-0-1

I hope this helps... Just be glad we're not stuck in the days of 2400 baud! You prolly don't even know what that means. I remember waiting about 30 min just to download a relatively low resolution GIFF file.

Cya!
