to see if the alternator is junk, i unhooked the positive cable from the battery. is this a sound tactic for determining whether it's the alternator that is draining the battery?i did this in my truck too, to see if that alt. was bad and the truck still ran. but in the car when i did this the car stopped running. F.Y.I.... the airbag light flashes right before the battery goes dead. and before that happens, the airbag light just stays on. bad alternator?? a thanks a mill.

sounds like it ... local parts stores will check for free take it by..
btw taking cables off are ok on older cars but should not be done on newer cars voltage spike can damage or destroy elct. parts..
also you should have a full charge on your battery so you do not damage new alt.. and other parts

Yes, its shot. The airbag light sounds like another problem. The airbag has a reserve battery behind the glove compartment that lasts around an hour. Get a new altenator and stay away from Auto Zone and Advance Auto for altenators and starters. Oreillys (Ultima brand) is great if you have one close.

Take it to the auto parts store. They will test it for free. If you don't want to do that, test the battery with a multimeter. It should produce about 14 volts.
