The two party system dates way way back, as does the electoral college. It was a way that wealthy landowners could insure that that only the appropriate votes counted (at one point, you had to own land to be a voter).

The system is ancient, and was set up to insure factors that no longer exist today. It is suited for the two party system, because your votes are counted for party seats in the electoral college. The person occupying that seat then votes (supposedly, he or she votes the concience of their consituents, but essentially votes along party lines).

This is why it is so difficult for an independent to win, and why they cannot participate in the primaries. The system literally almost forces you to choose sides.

The two party system is best suited to the electoral college because representatives vote for the voice of the people. It simplifies the counting of the votes and state representation in the national government.
