I don't feel logic and force are related logic can't force you to do anything but a gun can.

it just means that men/women are ignorant and few think they can win without force, it's cowardice, the quote means that people are cowardice and stupid and win only by means that almost insure victory

In this quote force is seen as a physical means of getting what you want whereas logic is a mental thing. You force the person through persuasion. Using guns you threaten the person's physical being. Using persuasion you get the person to think, in fact you lead their thoughts. Some people have the 'talent' of persuasion, and some have a strong defense against it, which is why "those who know they cannot win by means of logic have always resorted to guns".

Ayn Rand posed this dichotomy in "Atlas Shrugged". It was a comment meant to expose the difference between those who produce and those who loot or mooch from the producers. Men who use logic as it was meant to be used (in an Aristotelian manner) are the ones who become the producers in society. She was referring specifically to inductrialists who create the underpinnings of society that make civilization possible. The guns comment refers to the politicians and bureaucrats who make laws and create taxes to take from the rich and distribute it to the undeserving poor. This was a rebuke of communism. In fact, Atlas Shrugged is filled with the moochers and looters quoting Marxist buzzwords, such as "Each according to his ability, each according to his need". She brilliantly shows the consequences of communism if it is followed to its obvious conclusion.

In short, if you have logic, you will be able to produce. If you do not have logic, then you have some sort lesser quality and depend on "feelings". Those feelings lead to the guns. It is no stretch to realize that the height of illogical and irrational behavior has feelings and emotions at its core.

Any Rand was much too simplistic in posing this dichotomy. A simple mental exercise holds her logic up to refutation. Have you not know of any one who used both logic and force, when the situations warranted?. Logic and force need not be opposed, in definition, or effect.

There are the two primary forces in man. The instinctive gut reactions that propel reactions based on instinct and then the unque capacity of humans (as opposed to all other beings) to reason out a response and choose a response.

I think it is easier to think of it in terms of needs. I need food and water. If I can't get it by planning, coersion or hard work, I will take it by force.

Guns equate to force, logic equates to persuasion. Logic is not equating to force in this statement.

I made this observation years ago and i think it is the same as ayn rands. When a person exhausts his verbal argument then he will resort to combat. AYN's hypothesis is incomplete,in the face of adversity one can use UNCONDITIONAL LOVE,it is the most powerful power in the world. few there be that know how to use it properly.

how can you not belive in the force of logic? no one's ever convinced you to change your mind without holding a gun to your head?

Pretty poetic for Ann...but it's kind of stating the obvious. "If I can't convince you to change, I will use force." Here is an option, put down the gun, put down your mits, and walk away.
