One person in ninth grade is a freshman. If you're referring to more than one person in ninth grade then it's freshmen. They are the same basic meaning - just the singular and plural versions.

One would be a freshman
more than one would be freshmen
unless they are women. Then they would be freshwomen, unless they are stale. lol.
How about calling them frosh or just ninth graders?
