You may be smelling the sewer if there is no trap drain for it. That is a curvy pipe that holds water so you don't get the sewer smells.
For example... Look under your kitchen sink and see the drain there... Good Luck.. Elaine

You must have a older model Maytag Neptune. Check the rubber boot between the tank and the frame, just inside the door at the bottom. It should be clean, but if there is brownish mold looking stuff there that's your problem. Run a cycle of bleach through it, and or baking soda, and switch to the HE low suds detergent. The suds regular detergent makes during a load builds up in the boot, leaving a grimy build up after a while it starts to stink. Don't leave wet clothes in the washer for a long time either, that will make it sour and mildew. Try leaving the door cracked when not in use. All this I did when my front loader did exactly the same thing. Good luck

first of all put vinegar on sponge and then bicarbonate of soda and throoughly wipe inside and around the bowl, then do a wash with no washing in it, and put in a large cup of vinegar,
it works well, to eliminate all smells.

after you do laundry, leave the door ajar so the inside can dry. Otherwise, it gets really stinky.
