help, pleaze solve and check: y+3/2y = 2/3

you need to factor out the y...so you get
y(1+3/2)=2/3
divide by (1+3/2)
(2/3)/(5/2)=y
flip the (5/2) and multiply by (2/3)
y=4/15

Check
(4/15)+(3/2)X(4/15)=2/3
4/15+(12/30)=2/3
8/30+12/30=20/30 or 2/3

Also, what does "3/2y" mean? Do you mean 3/2 times y? Or do you mean 3 over 2y? It makes a difference you know!

Since your problem is unclear, I will assume you mean 3/2 times y and solve for you. If you meant 3 over 2y, you can solve yourself but following the same method I use here:

y + (3/2)y = 2/3

combine your y terms to get:

(5/2)y = 2/3

now multiply both sides by 2/5 to get:

y = 2/3 * 2/5 = 4/15

Since other people have done this if only the number is the fraction, here's what to do if the variable is on the bottom of the fraction.

The key when you've got fractions in an equation is to multiply EVERY term by a common denominator that will cancel out all the fractions. In this problem (assuming you copied it correctly), you'd multiply all three terms by 6y. That would give you the polynomial 6y^2 + 9 = 4y. You'd most likely get all your terms on one side: 6y^2 - 4y + 9 = 0 and use the quadratic formula to solve it. This particular problem happens to have complex rather than real number answers.

When you mean 3/2y, do you really mean (3/2)y?
