i was blow drying my hair and had a portable heater running at the same time when the power blew out in my room. the rest of the rooms in the house are fully functiong, just my own. i flipped the switch on the breaker, and it fixed it one time, but not after that. i tried flicking off the main switch, and still nothing. my sister was unaware of the situation and did the same thing in her room: plugged in the heater and blow dried her hair, and the same thing happened: she lost power, as did some of the outlets in the rooms adjacent to her.

can someone give me an idea on exactly what the problem is? i'm guessing i need an electrician for this, so how much does it usually cost? thanks in advance for the help.

Circuit breakers work on a spring action, and if the spring is gone, so is the breaker. However, not to fret or start spending money too fast. If you simply flick the breaker back to where its supposed to be, it might not make contact. So, first move the breaker to as far LEFT as you can, THEN flip it back to the RIGHT. If that doesnt work, just move the breaker left to right few times and it should "catch".

Those giving you advice to spend money right away, have little experience with resetting breakers....dont take any advice to spend money right away if you can avoid it. Even people here THINK they know something, but usually are full of hot air and they blow it at your expense. Good luck!

You killled your breaker...you could replace it yourself if you turn off the main....but if your not sure you may want an electrician.....just don't have them over on the weekends.....thats going to cost you.......the cost varies.
You also may want the electrician up the amperage for the house..so it doesn't happen again.

Do you need to reset a ground fault circuit interrupter?
It's usually the red button to reset.
