Husband and I are into the 12th month of trying to conceive. Both each have a child from previous relationships but having no luck together. He took one of those home male fertility test and it came back negative endicating his sperm count is less then 20 million sperm per mil of semen. How is this when he has had three women pregnant before, one live birth. The last time was about four years ago and each time the women got pregnant from like one time of unprotected sex. We have sex 5-7 times a week and have been for the past year, no pregnancy though. Is this weird? Should we see a doctor or is it just like that for some couples? I know the stress level has been high because of this and I just got him to stop smoking cigs and marijauna. But he did both of thosee before and still got others pregnant. We have been married two years and I am getting frustrated. It only took me one month to get pregnant with my son. What's the problem with us together?

It took me a year to get pregnant with my one and only child.

Go to http://www.mymonthlycycles.com and put in your period info and it will calculate when you will be fertile and ovulating. It is a free and very helpful site.

Trying to Conceive - Helpful tips for getting pregnant
Find out when you are ovulating
There are several ways you can do this. One of the easiest ways is to purchase a Basal thermometer and start charting your temperatures. You can use Justmommies free fertility chart to record and keep track of your temperatures. Make sure you take you use a basal thermometer.

It is the most accurate for charting ovulation. Take your temperature as soon as you wake up, before you get out of bed, go to the bathroom or do anything. Try to take your temperature at the same time every morning if you can. This way your chart will be more precise. The best time to have sex is between the time your temperature drops and before it rises again.

One other way you can find out when you are ovulating is by using an ovulation predictor test. You can purchase ovulation tests in bulk online to make it more affordable. Ovulation kits measure the amount of Lutenizing Hormone in your body. Right before you ovulate your body releases a large amount of LH. The test kits are easy to use. They are very similar to a pregnancy test. You will have a reference line and then a sample line to compare that to. Once you show a positive test for ovulation you should have intercourse within twenty-four hours.

Some of the best ways to predict when you are ovulating are by watching your body for signs of ovulation. Some women feel cramping on one side when they ovulate. Ovulation pain should not be the only thing you watch for but it is one indicator of ovulation. You should also keep an eye on your cervical mucous. You will notice that your cervical mucous will pick up several days before ovulation. When your cervical mucous starts to look like egg white and becomes really slippery, this is the best time to get pregnant. The slippery consistency helps to carry the sperm up the vaginal canal. Some doctors recommend taking Robitussin to help thin out your mucous which will help to transport the semen.

Some dos and don’ts for getting pregnant

Do limit movement after intercourse. Standing up after intercourse can cause the semen to leak out. Try to wait twenty minutes after sex before getting up and moving around.

Do try to keep the sperm inside your vagina longer. You can hold the labia together to try to keep the sperm inside of you. You can also try putting a pillow under your pelvis to help tilt your body so the sperm can travel upwards easier.

Do try to make sex enjoyable. Sometimes when a couple is trying to conceive it will affect the quality of their sex life. More enjoyable sex means higher sperm count and better “swimmers”.

Do limit intercourse and male masturbation prior to the days you are trying to conceive. It will help to increase the man’s sperm count and improve your chances of getting pregnant.

Do take prenatal vitamins if you are trying to conceive. Folic acid and other vitamins are very important during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Don’t drink alcohol or use drugs at the time of conception. This applies to both the male and female. There is strong evidence that alcohol can effect your chances of getting pregnant.

Don’t douche after having intercourse. It can wash out the sperm that has just entered your body.

Don’t have oral sex prior to intercourse. There is some evidence that the bacteria in the mouth can cause damage to male sperm.

Don’t have anal sex prior to intercourse. Bacteria in the anas can be carried into the vagina from the man’s penis. If you do have anal sex before intercourse, make sure your partner washes his penis first.

If you have been trying to conceive for over a year please consult a doctor. You may need to have tests run or use fertility treatments.

I completely understand! We have been trying for #2 for over 2 years and I got pregnant for my son while on the pill! You should probably schedule an appointment with your ob/gyn for a fertility work up. Also they will send your husband for an official semen analysis...which may come back fine(you never know). I know all this because we are going through it all now. Feel free to im me should you ever like to talk. Also, the doctor will ask if you have been charting your tempratures to try and pinpoint ovulation...you may want to start that. Here is how:
The only way for you to know if you are ovulating is to take your basal body temp each morn, same time and before you get up. You should see a pattern in temps that leads up to and after ovulation. You can get the basal thermometer at Wal-Mart for about 8 dollars. I use a wonderful FREE website called Fertilityfriend.com...it graphs your temps for you, keeps track of your fertility signs, tells you when you ovulate and also tells you if there is an implantation dip in your temps. You can also use Ovulation prediction kits, but they only measure your LH surge and give you a ball park time for ovulation...they do not pin point it. Oh, and it is possible to be ovulating while you do not have your period, just like it is possible to have a period and not ovulate.

If the test indicated that he has a low sperm count then he may need to go to the doctor to see what he can do to raise it up. Secondly smoking doesn't really help so I am glad he quit. The next problem is that you may be having sex too much. Wait until you are ovulating to have sex with him. Your ovulation date should be 14 days from the first day of your period. You may be successful and the doctor will tell you that you need to slow up the amount of sex that you are having. That may be the reason his sperm count is down. Good luck with trying to get the baby you so desparately want. I hope you get him/her.

Most doctors say that it can take a healthy couple a year to concieve. After that time there may be fertility problems with either you or your husband. Your husband should have a semen anaylsis done to make sure the problem is not with him. If he has a good sperm count then you should see your OBGYN, so they can check you out to make sure you don't have any problems. I am not sure what you mean when you say the semen comes straight out? Do you mean that he ejaculates outside of you? I hope this gives you some help.

You may be having too much sex. His body doesn't have enough time to regenerate enough sperm to get you pregnant. Try every other day.
