The fight took place during the Canada/Russia game of the World Junior Tournament in 1986 or 87. Russia had done very poorly in the tournament that year and had no chance of winning a medal. Canada only needed a tie or a win against Russia to get the Gold medal. As a result of the fight both teams were ejected from the tournament and Canada lost all medals they might have won. Russia lost absolutely nothing in terms of medals. The fight was initiated and escalated by Russia who had nothing to lose anyway. When the Canadian team returned to Canada, Harold Ballard had Gold medals made for all of the players. The international federation was going to suspend Canada from further tournaments but thought better of it.

Note: The tournament was decided by the finish in the round robin play in those years not by a championship playoff of the top teams in the tournament.

Note: The officiating left something to be desired. The referees who are there to protect the players left the ice rather than deal with it.

Note: The organizers handled it by turning off the lights. There was a real smart move. Let's let the players fight in the dark with razor sharp skates on their feet.

Opinion: I'm not really sure why Canada takes part in international hockey. we have the best product in the world and don't have to prove anything to anyone.

Cuz the only way Canada can beat skilled teams is by A)Clutching and Grabbing, B)Playing really dirty (Bobby Clarke) , C)Trying to sucker the other team into a fight.

If the game was played on a bigger rink and they took out all the dirty work, Russia would kick their ***.

Want to provide a link or something. This isn't really doing much good to just ask and not tell us who it was.
