Cos it distracts us from our boring little lives. But on a serious note (I don't know how serious you are with your question) i actually have spent time thinking about this. Men seem to need some sort of war related activity in their lives. We treat sports as a substitute for fighting and war, just listen to the analogies. The coach is regarded as the general, the field is the battleground, the players are the troops. Back in the old days men went to war and hunted and fought. Nowadays we've lost all our primitive and dare i say it, masculine ways. We need sports to make us feel like men again.
Either that or he just likes football. (Some advice: when your watching football or any sports with your husband don't ask questions during the game, it's really annoying!)

Believe it or not but football and basketball are two of the greatest american sports to watch....its the excitement factor, the thrill of the game. My ex was like that and it annoyed me too, however I am still a football and basketball fan as well but I personally don't have to sit and stare at the tube all day watching it. Most men loves sports and from a woman's perspective, we are not suppose to understand why they do it....they just do. Besides if your husband works hard, what's the harm in him spending one day as a couch potato ? :)

Why do some people obsess over Grey's Anatomy and Survivor? Because they bring enjoyment to people.
As for sitting on the sofa all day and watching football/basketball, it is something most men enjoy doing as most of us men have been conditioned to watch sports and it gives us a way to hang out and "bond" without sharing feelings or discussing our issues in a long, drawn out manner.

Perhaps because they are team sports which still allow for individual effort and achievement.
