In 2005...
Grand Rapids population: 193,780
Grand Rapids-Wyoming Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population: 771,185
Grand Rapids-Muskegon-Holland Combined Statistical Area (CSA) population: 1,315,319

Many times, looking at the area population is more indicative of the city's size. Why? Because many cities are very large geographically, which inflates their population.

For example:
Grand Rapids population: 193,780
Grand Rapids size: 45 square miles
Anchorage population: 275,043
Anchorage size (land area): 1,697 square miles

You'll see that Anchorage is larger in population by 81,263. However, it is 38 times bigger in land area.

Grand Rapids-Wyoming MSA population: 771,185
Grand Rapids-Wyoming MSA size (land area): 2,827 square miles
Anchorage MSA population: 351,049
Anchorage size (land area): 19,832 square miles

Here you can see that the Grand Rapids MSA is more than 2 times as big as the Anchorage MSA in population, despite being more than 7 times smaller in size.

Grand Rapids is populated enough to also have a Combined Statistical Area with Muskegon and Holland.

Grand Rapids-Muskegon-Holland CSA population: 1,315,319
Grand Rapids-Muskegon-Holland CSA size: 4,729 square miles

Here you can see that the Grand Rapids CSA is more than 3.5 times as big as the Anchorage MSA in population, despite being more than 4 times smaller in size.
