I know this will sound weird, but try some vinegar. When I was pregnant I would swallow a tablespoon of vinegar and it would ease my heartburn. And I just don't have regular heartburn... I have acid reflux and heartburn EXTREMELY bad!! Good luck!!

take a spoonful of baking soda in water, or chase it with water. it tastes salty but it neutralizes the acid amazingly. that will give you relief within a few minutes. tums work the same way. if you take 2 or 3 tums that will do the same thing. this is the best way if you're overrun with pain from the heartburn. it might only last 1-2 hours.

The next level up would be to take an acid reducer. The most popular in order are:
Zantac (ranitidine)
Pepcid AC (famotidine)
Tagamet (cimetidine)
Those will work for a few hours -- good if you get heartburn occasionally. They can take 20-40 minutes to start working, so you might want to try ingesting some baking soda or taking some tums if you're in pain.

The highest level would be to take a proton pump inhibitor. The only one available over the counter is Prilosec OTC. There are some as strong, and some even stronger available as a prescription. They are:
Prevacid
Nexium
Protonix
[there might be 1 or 2 more of these, but I'm not 100% caught up.]
These you take 1 a day and they last all day. If you get heartburn a few times a week you might want to consider these. These can take 1-4 hours to work, or up to a few days if you're taking them for the first time. They're mostly meant to be taken every day.

You don't say how old you are or how long you have had the symptoms for. If it is the first time you have had this and are over 50 you would be best to see your GP as it can be attributed to other problems, otherwise you can go down the route of Gaviscon which forms a raft over the top of your stomach and then neutralises the acid which is produced, this is best taken after food and at bedtime, or you can use something to actually stop the acid being produced, the ingredient is called ranitidine and it is available in Gaviscon range, also boots do their own version or the brand name is Zantac. The other ingredient is called Omeprazole and this can be available over the counter at pharmacy only, I think the brand name is Zanprol, again it actually stops the acid being produced. If you are taking any other medication you really need to speak to a pharmacist or your GP as sometimes the side effects can be caused by some medication, hope this helps, all the best LMxx

Rennie is good short term, but I have discovered this week that a bowl of "Dorset Cerial" (or any healthy muesli) with organic yoghurt for breakfast, with a tablespoon of added "goji berries" and "flax seeds", followed up by a half hour of exercise (need not be strenuous), a sandwich for lunch, and a healthy dinner (recommend white fish with onions, tomatoes and cayenne pepper, done in the oven, served with boiled potatoes and green beans), will definitely cure your heart-burn: probably within a day. 7 hours of sleep will also help.

I hope this doesn't sound patronising. I have really begun to exercise and eat more healthily, and my heartburn problem has vanished immediately. Heartburn is your body telling you that you are abusing it.

Don't drink coffee in the morning, or on an empty stomach.
Tylenol ( acetaminophen ) Gives me heartburn consistantly.
Wine & alcohol can also give you heartburn.

Other than that just keep the acids down.

But Coffee is a huge culprit for causing indigestion.

Take a tum or drink some milk to get things back in line, but try not to make a habit of it.

A tall glass of cold milk actually helps! The milk neutralizes the acidity of heart burn in about 5 to 10 minutes. Works really well!

heartburn is usually a symptom of a variety of problems...too much or too little stomach acid, inability to eat spicey or fattening, greasy foods, ulcers, etc that only a doctor should actually diagnose, but not eating just before you go to bed is good....drinking a lot of water and sometimes propping up pillows or a head board slightly helps to keep your head more elevated in the event you are having acid reflux. It really is important to see a dr if it becomes chronic as there may be problems with the esophagus...particularly if one is a smoker..

Omeprazole 20mg once daily.... can be prescribed by your doctor or obtained in a weaker form over the counter from a pharmacy. Otherwise, there is gaviscon in various shapes or and forms. But a good thing is to look at your diet as this usually is the root cause.

I know everyone swears by Gaviscon, but I personally find it useless! Good old Rennie seems to work the best, but failing any indigestion cures, peppermint tea is a fairly acceptable substitute.

Don`t eat too much before going to bed.If you have a heavy meal and lie down it can be really painful a few hours into your sleep. You could have a Hiatus Hernia if you suffer with heartburn when you go to bed.If this happens often get it checked out.
