Teams used to wear dark on the road and white at home.
When teams started coming out with 3rd jerseys. Things got complicated and expensive. They now had to take 2 sets on the road, and remember each player has 3 or 4 jersey's. (Fighters have more, you can't wear a ripped or blood stained sweater.) There was added cost, and weight in relation to traveling and also if you can believe it not all rinks have laundry facilities for away teams, so they had to dry clean all the time. The league and the PA didn't want to get rid of the 3rd jersey though, it was making money, so they just switched to white on the road. Home fans can enjoy the dark colored sweater options. And it wasn't that big of a deal because that's how it was back in the day, white on the road!

actually the real reason....is that its under NHL by-law, teams have to change their jerseys every so many years....in fact even the layout of the jersey has to change.

the minimum time a jersey has to have a look is 3 years....or 2 seasons....so if a team creates a shitty jersey....they have to wait after the end of the second season to consider changing it.

the color change is NHL by-law so expect to see the white jerseys as home jerseys in 20-30 years

It has been two seasons now, I think you are right, to sell a few more Jerseys and that way they can wear their third Jerseys at home also. I think it is the only pro sport that the home team is wearing colors.

Back in the early 70's the NHL changed to wearing their whites at home, and it's just a change back.

And for the record, most football teams wear colored jerseys at home.

It was actually a change-up in the way things looked... it got a little 'boring'. It's also the reason why the "third jersey" was introduced - simply to add more spice to the game...

...and more money from fans buying additional colors that were suddenly appropriate for games.

I think because the road jerseys look better to play at home and the fans enjoy it more.

They didn't!

They just started wearing their non-white jerseys. Why? Because they look better, and will make more money that way.

It's all about $$.
It's to show as many people as possible different jerseys so that they will buy them.
