In the late 1800s parades of costumed revelers became common; in 1920 Gimbel's department store in Philadelphia staged a parade of about 50 people with Santa Claus at the rear of the procession. In 1924 the first annual Macy's parade in New York City continued the tradition, with huge balloons introduced in 1927. The holiday associated with Pilgrims and Native Americans has come to symbolize intercultural peace, America's opportunity for newcomers, and the sanctity of home and family.

We use gourds. I have seen them in most of the grocery stores. They are in all kinds of shapes, colors and sizes. We fill a bowl with them and put them in the center of the table.

If you don't have to worry about allergies, you may want to go out to the park and pull some leaves and cat tails. They can go into the centerpiece or in a tall vase.

If you have candles, you can use those. Go for beige or a light orange.

If you like crafts and can sew, many of the fabric shops have holiday fabric. You can use fabrics that have fall leaves and other fall colors on them. You could sew a table runner or make placemats.

Have fun.
