Ego, self importance. Hate is a powerful tool that the person uses to control his/her space on this earth. You can be a well educated person with a healthy level of self-esteem and still hate the Jew, black person or even your mother-in-law, why? Because they have invaded your clean space.

People confuse self pride with hatred for others when aforementioned people express their pride by putting others down. You don't have to make someone else feel bad in order to show that you love yourself. The great thing about love is that it expands so you can love yourself and love everybody else as well.
