It travels a distance of 1 light year. A light year is a distance.

You are way off in the speed of light in other units.
186000 mi/sec. multiply by number of seconds in a year ie. 365days*24hrs/day*60min/hr*60sec/min = 31536000 multiply that by 186000 for answer BIG (3.1536*10^7)* (1.86 *10^5 = 5.86*10^12 or approx 5860000000000 miles

A light year is the distance light travels in one year. 186,000 miles per second. Do the math if you want to know how many miles per year.

Light travels at the speed of 186,000 per second. So, you're just alittle off there. In one year, it is something like 3 trillion miles. That's pretty fast. But to give you an idea of in universal terms how slow it could be thought of, or how large our own galaxy is, it takes six minutes for sunlight to reach the earth. Six minutes, at 186,000 miles per second. Things are pretty far apart in our universe, aren't they?

Its 186000 miles per second

Here is what you do.
186000 * 60 seconds * 60 minutes * 24 hours * 365.25 days

You should get 5.87862537 × 10^12

In one year, light would travel 9.4^12 kilometers (..5.8^12 miles)

Light travels approximately 300,000,000 meters in one second. Multiply by the number of seconds in one year and you'll have your answer.

# of seconds in one year? Start with minutes, then hours, then days, then a year. Lots of multiplying, but it's better than having someone just give you the answer!

Its 186,000 miles per second so a light year is 9,500,000,000,000 kilometers. Good luck.
