Yes they stated several weeks before the test that they were going to have it. They have also said several times over the last few years that they might have to have a test or two to make the world take them seriously as a nuclear power.

They've been saying for months that they're developing nuclear technology, and would be testing their bombs when they were ready.
I don't know if that's "threatening", but certainly it was not unannounced.
