I agree on this score Gary.

I am also tired of wealthy folk expecting and targetting Mr and Mrs Mop to donate more and more from there very ordinary dwindling finances.

If only Britain had an Eva Peron. In a country as wealthy as Britain is, had there been a more even spread of wealth- there would be no need for charity at all.

Still I suppose the big wigs of this world feel they are buying there place through good deeds in the gates of heaven. ? ? ?

Tonight is the first night I have ever attended a pubic meeting with the local authority. I attended to support not selling a public building to private enterprise. I did this because politically I feel it is wrong to take something away from Joe Public which could be of immense use to him.

Whether the protest group is successful or not, it seems that the local authority have agreed to sell to the highest bidder, who intends to turn the library into private apartments a few offices shops and a restaurant.

Some rich people are only rich because of what they have stolen from the people.

Others are rich because it comes from what they inherit.

Some people are rich because they have found that crime pays, corporate criminals are rarely caught.

The only rich people I like, are the few who have worked jolly hard to be successful.

So yes the rich should give more because they have more, but even in giving they can make big savings on tax.

If anyone ever tells you that the rich shouldn't pay more, they must be blinkered. Remember for every very rich man who by courstesy of birth or work or work status there are hundreds of men and women who have been trampled on, on the road to ones mans riches. This is the tale of greed and corruption.

I think that Gates is not only giving his money, he is giving his
time and so is his wife and Buffet is following up. Which is more
important, the money or his personal attention to see that the
money ends up in the correct hands, and used for the purposed that was previously determined? You know that many in underdeveloped countries, aid never reaches those who need it most, and Mr. Gates is making sure that it does. He is a great man an I admire him more for his personal care, than for the financial aid . Furthermore Turner, Bloomberg, only to mention
two better known fortunes, will follow in Mr Gate‘s shoes which
means that, if the well known wealthy give, the lesser wealthy
will follow even if in a lesser manner. All of us, Americans or not, should be very proud of Mr. Gates, as much as I am, and I
assure you that I don‘t know him and have never met him. Please,
review your ideas. Cheers Pal - Iain Ritichie (A Scotsman)

I think we should all consider donating to deserving causes, and do it under gift aid (that way rounf the charity can reclaim the TAX youve paid on that money).

however what is a deserving cause to one person by be a waste of money to others - look at lottery disbursements (somepoeple regard the Royal Opera House & Royal Ballet as a worthy beneficiary, soem dont). its likely htat the grandees living in london will see it as beneficial, people out in the sticks on low wages wont.

Governemnts argue that they know best, but if you have soem casue or passion then make a donation to that casue or passion, encourage others to do so.

Making a donation out of belief is far better and more worhty than making a doantion out of a need for publicity or self serving motives. the amount doenst matter, the cuase does.

Since amassing his fortune, Gates has pursued a number of philanthropic endeavors, donating large amounts of money (about 52% of his total fortune) to various charitable organizations and scientific research programs through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, founded in 2000.

Bill Gates supports a number of issues here in the United States and all over the world ... he is using his billions to help ... see

They do give more money, and because they're rich, they CAN give more money. Bill Gates is well-known for being a philanthopist, but what you may not want to face is that both President George Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney gave money to hurricane relief-related charities in fiscal 2005, and since Cheney is richer, he was able to give more than Bush.

Well, people in middle class should donate a fair amount of money, but wealthy tycoons like Gates should donate a great portion of their cash to honorable causes.

Bit unfair on Mr Gates as he donates far more than anyone else I know of. Some celebs / rich people are very greedy though.

Hmmm. I think they have an entire system of morality based on your idea.

“You fear the man who has a dollar less than you, that dollar is rightfully his, he makes you feel like a moral defrauder. You hate the man who has a dollar more than you, that dollar is rightfully yours, he makes you feel that you are morally defrauded. The man below is a source of your guilt, the man above is a source of your frustration. You do not know what to surrender or demand, when to give, and when to grab, what pleasure in life is rightfully yours and what debt is still unpaid to others---you struggle to evade, as ‘theory’ the knowledge that by the moral stand you’ve accepted you are guilty every moment of your life, there is no mouthful of food you swallow that is not needed by someone somewhere on earth---and you give up the problem in blind resentment, you conclude that moral perfection is not to be achieved or desired, that you will muddle through by snatching a snatch can and by avoiding the eyes of the young, of those who look at you as if self-esteem were possible and they expected you to have it. Guilt is all that you retain within your soul---and so does every other man, as he goes past, avoiding your eyes"

Oh, thats a pretty picture you paint.

Have you not seen how many billions of dollars Gates and Buffet are donating to charity?

A great many people who are wealthy donate quite a bit of money to charity. And many of the most wealthy folks have taken on large philanthropic endeavors.

Are you expecting them to giv away all their money?
