the pins and the red strip on the side

a manul helps

jumpers decide what drive is master and/or slave

unless you use cable select which will automatically put the drive on the middle connecter to slave..

its not hard besides mother boards have pins and a block on the middle pin on the cable itself

if you screw it up, you should close your pc and seek physical help.
cuz its extremely easy

ground yourself first

or be ready to purchase a new board

OK <----------------- Read on

The IDE cable either has one connector on each end ,in that case it doesnt matter.
If it has 3 connectors on it . Still doesnt matter. Except ideally the cable should connect to the Mother board using the longer of the ribbon. You have a connector then about 8inches of ribbon then a connector and 3 inches of ribbon then connector at end. The 2 connectors together attach to Hard drives or Master / Slave
Master being the end Of the Ribbon and any Slave being the connector 3 inches into the ribbon.
The cable normally can only be attached one way. Either by a locater tab on the plastic or maybe a pin missing.
If not then the Red stripe on the cable goes to the #1 Pin
An easy way to hook up Hard drive is the red stripe should be closest to the Power connector on Your hard drive. Thats the other cable with the red and yellow wires in it.
The Mother Board Has IDE ! and IDE 2 you want IDE 1 and the #1 pin will be viewable with #1 or #2 or a small solid triangle which is an arrow pointing at the #1 pin.

Either end of the cable will work on the hard drive or the motherboard. The thing you have to look for is the red strip, or sometimes blue, on one side of the cable. The stripe goes to the number one pin on the motherboard. Look closely at the board, you will probably have to have a flashlight. One end of the connector should have a 1 and the other end should have a 40. The stripe goes to the one. On the hard drive, the stripe goes toward the power supply, where the power cord plugs in. On the motherboard, you should have two ide connectors. One should be labled one or primary, the other should be labled two or secondary. On the hard drive, there should be jumpers labled master, slave, and cable select. I recommend using master or slave, as the cable select doesn't always select the way you want. Good luck.

If the cable is not marked on it as to where to put it, then if u hold your cable up you will have 3 connectors, then holding the center connector take the longest end that one goes to your motherboard, the other end goes to your master hard drive and the center one that you are holding in your hand goes to the slave hard drive. If you have any further questions regarding your computer I will give you my e-mail address.

You should always connect the red side of the wire to pin 1.

Depending on your cable's connector, it may or may not have a validation socket. If it does, you just have to try both ways and see which one fits.

Hope this helps! :)
