What is the main area of running a successful business?
Is it selling, marketing, advertising, market research, accounting, Negotiating, Business Planning, etc? Thanks

As a small business owner in IT:
Selling is number 1, but I view marketing, advertising, market research as all means to that end.
Market research needs to come before marketing and advertising or you won't understand who you are targeting.
Business planning is very important, and can include much of the above work. However, sales is still the most important thing for a successful business.
Accounting is important, but it's relatively simple and straightforward. No one reinvents the wheel with accounting (unless you're author anderson).

you really can't really rank these because a successful business relies on the unique combination of all of the things you mentioned.

you can start off with excellent marketing, but if your distribution stinks, you'll be out of business really fast. i can go on and on and on.
