Moms: What do you recommend? I am 21 wks pregnant with my 1st child, so all this baby stuff is very new to me. My husband doesn't want to buy a bassinet, he thinks a crib will be enough but a crib seems kind of large for a newborn. Plus I plan on breastfeeding and I'm thinking having a bassinet in the bedroom might be a little more convenient.

If I were to just use a crib, is there some sort of support pillows that you can buy to put around the baby?

OK, if you are going to breastfeed, I suggest that you definitley get both!! I know things get costly but it makes your life a lot easier!! Trust me you will need "easy" when you have a baby! Try and see if a friend or a thrift store has a bassinet. A crib is great too. You can get these blankets that have foams in them to prevent the baby from rolling over. ( I have a couple) they work good too. But it is a lot easier if you have a bed in the room with you. Then you dont have to leave the room in the night. The baby will be way to small for the crib at first. Just expalin to your husband that even though you are going to spend a lot of money on this baby, when/if you have anymore you already have all the things for the second baby!! And you can always sell these things at garage sales etc. they go fast!!! Good luck and I wish you well with your new baby!!

I had a portable bassinet with my daughter. If your husband doesn't want a bassinet then maybe think about a playpen that has the bassinet portion. This way your not spending money on something that will be used for only a short period of time. The playpen can be moved into the living room after the baby begin to crawl. They are get for when you need to clean and the baby is into everything.
Yeah though still get you a crib because you will use it for at least two to three years. The bonus with the crib that you can get the convertible kind that go from a crib to a toddler bed to a full size bed. they are a little more pricey but in the long run it will definitely pay for itself. A toddler bed alone is roughly fifty dollars. You are doing the right thing by thinking things through before you settle on anything. Good luck and I hope everything goes GREAT!!!

Usually you buy both. The bassinet is for the first couple of months and a crib for a later. Bassinets are for parents to have the baby near them when sleeping. So they are not really necessary. I would have a crib ready for the baby. Also buy a monitor for when the baby starts in the crib. So the reason why you would buy both is : 1)WOODEN CRIB : Its all ready to go and set up . You dont have to go out and buy a crib with a newborn. You can wash the sheets for the crib already. 2) BASSINET: The bassinet can be moved around and taken with you. Can be put right beside your bed when there walking up very frequently. So my answers is buy both and be prepared! EDIT: Dont make the mistake of buying a Graco Travel play yard for a crib. Buy a wooden one. These are only for newborns or naps. Babies should have wooden cribs with mattresses.

My baby is 8 days old. All of my kids have had both. Because the bassinet (in my opinion) is a god-send. It can come with you to the kitchen while you cook, to the dining room while you eat, the living room while you watch TV and then to your bedroom with you to sleep. My oldest was a preemie and they reccomended that I get a bassinet- though I don't know why; but I went out and got one. But they inevitably need a crib as well. :) My baby has a wedge thingy and I forget what it's called but it's to keep him in place with a triangle wedge on both sides of him. But below there's a link to a wedge to elevate the crib mattress slightly as well. I picked my thingy up at wal-mart for $6

A bassinet by the bed IS convenient for breast feeding, but babies outgrow them so fast! I suppose that your finances should be a consideration, If you can't afford both, get the crib and skip the pillows. Get decent "bumper pads" instead. I know lots of ladies who put babies in playpens next to their beds, but be careful about bending over! There are also travel bassinets and playpens that are smaller, less expensive, and easier to move. Check yard sales, used baby furniture stores, etc, maybe you could afford both!

A crib is an absolute necessity......

Bassinets are beautiful, but after about two months, the baby has outgrown them......

If you are hoping to have something smaller for the baby to sleep in while it is sleeping in your room, consider a port-a-crib. You can continue to use it for a couple of years and there are lots of cute bedding options.

I would go with crib, simply because they will outgrow the bassinet sooner. You can buy those cribs that convert into a toddler bed then a double. That is what I am going to buy.

you may consider a portable crib since its convenient in size for your bedroom and you can use it a lot longer than a bassinet which they outgrow before you know within 2-3 months...

If you are on a budget just get the crib. If you can afford it you can get the bassinet. I bought a playyard for my son and he hated sleeping in the bassinet part of it, so he ended up sleeping in his bouncy seat or swing.

Get your baby in a crib right away. They need there own safe place and you need a good sleep yourself. If you need to have them nap here and there some times, get a moses basket.Your husband is soooo right. You will not want to breast feed in bed. You will wake him, you will never get a position that is nice to your neck/back. You will have to then convince your child to sleep alone in it's own room someday and that will not go over well. Believe me. Cribs are great. They don't even roll over for at least 4 months! They sleep just fine in a big o'l crib on there back or tummy. Get a moniter and about every two hours they will make a li'l cough sound to forewarn you that they will soon turn it into a cry for hunger. These monitors will pick up the sound of a fly farti'n. You will hear his or her every sound. Be sure to turn it off b4 u leave your bdroom!! Leave your bed for you & your hunny.
