They did terrible last year because of so many injuries. Losing Derek Lee so early in the season hurt them bad. They just never got it back together. if they can have a pretty good injury free season I think you will see much improvement from them and a new manager which might be Lou Pinella

Injuries killed this team. Kerry Wood and Mark Prior are their top two starters, no team can survive their top 2 pitchers missing. Zambrano was their only legit pitcher. Derrek Lee getting hurt didn't help their cause. So this team was behind the eight ball from jump street. Poor Dusty Baker did what he could do; but he can't play the games. They just didn't have enough healthy bodies this season to be a contender.
The Cubs have a lot of work to do in the offseason. Being a Red Sox fan I know how tough losing year after year can be (we finally won it all in '04). But if they can makes some moves this offseason, maybe the Cubs can be competitive soon.

They can't expect to win anything without great starting pitching. Granted, Woods & Prior have been hurt more than they have been able to start. But, that ship has sailed....counting on either of them for the coming season as starters would be a gigantic mistake. Sure, it hurt when Lee was out and the team managed to come through with some fairly decent offense (AT TIMES), but you can't win ballgames with JUST good offense.
I love Dusty Baker and don't feel like it's fair for him to get all the blame. He can only do so much with what he is given and THAT is Hendry's job. So, in my opinion, Hendry is the one that should shoulder most of the responsibility. Dusty's probably glad to be moving on at this point. I'll miss him, but maybe some new blood in that position will help. Of the managers that they are interviewing, my pick is Girardi over Pinella. Look what he did for the Marlins this year when they weren't even TRYING to win games because they are wanting to move to Nevada. I think it would be very nice to have a former Cub as Manager (Girardi). I guess we'll wait and see!

First of all it was not Dusty Baker's fault! The Cubs organization invested the entire ranch on both Woods and Prior. It didn't work out. Both pitchers have very bad mechanics and as a result have had continuing arm problems. Whoever the pitching coaches were during this time should have been fired. I've watched both these guys pitch and with any type of constructive guidance they both would have worked out.
The Cubs have to first get a manager to guide them and two, put together a decent pitching staff as soon as possible. If they don't except another decade of misery.

where should this long time CUBBY fan begin
Kerry Wood refusing to change his mechanics and keeps getting injured
Mark Prior injured more than he starts
Derick Lee injured in the first month
Lead off hitter not not the Lead out
swinging at pitches way out of the strike zone
pitchers that has no idea where the strike zone is
lack of clutch hitting..how many times have the Cubs had a man on third and lees than 2 outs and couldn't score or better yet bases loaded with no outs and not be able to get a run across .
middle infield was clueless
PLEASE BRING UP FELIX PIE.. he couldn't of done much worse
A MANGER LIKE PINELLA TO KNOCK SOME SENSE INTO THEM
BRING BACK MADDUX AS PLAYER/PITCHING COACH

Sorry pal but when u cubbie fans stop filling up the Park for a looser, the Tribune has no reason to spend money. You can say all u want ,but in the 50s Brickhouse announced games with less than 1500 fans on ddl header Sundays. The only reason they are full is because of the convenient game time start, which allows fans to leave work and attend a game.Wrigley is for beer drinking, not baseball.Stay away and u will have a winner ,like your rivals across town.I have followed the SOX sense 1947 and they have almost always put up better numbers every season.Like it or not it's the truth.

Yes, injuries. They also traded away some good players a couple years ago......the team that almost made it to the World Series. They will probably recover and make the playoffs in the near future........I hope.
