The Most important thing to learn is how to read. It cant be stressed enough. If a child can read well he/she can learn everything else and will be able to participate in the democracy as an informed citizen; find a good job; learn new things over a lifetime; and enjoy the world of books.

Depends on what grade your teaching, but yeah, learning to read is very important. That, writing, and basic math are the most important things in 1st grade. You learn stuff like multiplication, division and cursive in second grade, etc. I learned to read in kindergarden, so I got to reading the harry potter books in first grade. Most little kids should be able to do that. At least in my school.

Reading is the foundation for learning. Without good reading skills, a student will struggle with their work, since they will not be able to comprehend what they are reading.
