East Germany was the Deutsche Demokratische Republik (German Democratic Republic), and West Germany was the Bundesrepublik Deutschland (Federal Republic of Germany). Before that it was called the Weimarer Republik (Weimar Republic), and before all that it was the Deutsches Kaiserreich (German Empire)

If you are taking about all the little German states before there was a Germany, they all had their own names, but the whole area was the Holy Roman Empire.

I believe it was called the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation (or something close to that).
But I'm sure it was then called the German Confederation for a great period of time...including Slovenia, parts of France, Czechelslovakia, and Austria. (forgive my spelling)

Don't forget the republic of Germany, which included Prussia, and Austria.

West, German Federal Republic. East, German People's Republic. Both of these in German, of course.
