Huh? Most "Blacks" do have African ancestry. But the real answer is Political Correctness.

What do you call a black person from Cuba? An African-Cuban?
Or how about from Haiti or Dom. Republic-- African-Haitian?

Its all dumb. PC has clouded ethnicity and race.

I have no idea. Mostly black people here have never even been to Africa. We stopped being "African" American a while ago. I think that should only be used if you have actually come from Africa. Not just because you are descended from Africans. Because technically every one is descended from Africans.

I don't believe all black people are referred to as African Americans. If you hear people say this about someone whom you know whose ancestors are not from Africa than you should correct them. I happen to know Black people from South America, Haiti, and other places. I believe the majority of black people living within the United States are of African heritage; hence the term was dubbed for political correctness in order to divert prejudice. You have to admit, some of the names that black people are called are not too cool. It's a specific term of deliniation used too often as a general description.

I've got to say I'm of the same mind. An American is an American, either you are or you aren't. I've always found it strange that people who complain about not being fairly treated in America - and many of them are absolutely correct about that - set themselves further apart by insisting on being identified by where their ancestors resided. It's not just African Americans, I've seen the same thing with Mexican Americans, Japanese Americans, etc. I've never really understood how that achieves or speaks for anything but a wish to be set further apart. Isn't that what most of us are trying to get away from these days? Why separate yourself further by self-imposed labels?

I have always wondered that too. My ancestors are from Europe so I guess I'm european american. Well at least I have been to europe whereas most of the blacks I know have never even been to Africa and most of their family from the last few generations is from the US

If your family has lived in America for at least three generations, I think you are AMERICAN. Not anything American, just American. If you don't even know what country in Africa your ancestors came from stop claiming the African part. It's one of my pet peeves.
