Entertainment. The spoon fed national media chooses what my "news" will be today. I like public radio and public television more for their no frills basic reporting.

It's not bad, national media news, but you need to know that by watching you might not be getting the whole picture.

Yes.

The modern news broadcast is information presented in an entertaining fashion. While we don't have contests where we ask people to name their congressman or woman for cash prizes, we clearly spice up the news with interesting graphics and explanations of how the story affects the average viewer.

And, a typical 30-minute news broadcast will have at least 1-3 "human-interest" segments that could run anytime, but will be appealing to a wide audience. Not everyone will care about the nuclear crisis in North Korea, but many people will be interested in what parents and kids have to say about this year's most popular Halloween costumes. Some will argue that the latter is not really news (and they might be right).

The answer to that has seemed to me, for a very long time, that they are more often going for entertainment, maybe because they are not allowed to tell us anything that might be informative. They have to come up with stuff to fill in the time, so we get to hear about congressional man boy love-fests, exciting police chases, and of course, missing co-eds. If nothing is going on there, bird flu is lurking around every corner, and Angelina Jolie's every move is always good fodder to fill in the time that should be spent informing us about the actual business of congress, the wars we are engaged in currently, and the wars that loom ahead for us. Just to name a few examples.

I'm glad I'm not alone in wondering about this, thank you for the question.

The News is slanted to fit that stations political views. Example FOX puts a conservative spin on news while CNN puts liberal spin. If you want actually news you need to weed through the spin to find actual story. Example during Irag War a hospital was destroyed. CNN/CBS told the story on how Hospital was bomb by US/allied forces and how many beds hospital had etc. Same story told by FOX US and British forces had contacted hospital weeks before to warn then that they were in danger of being very close to a planned attack. Hospital was evacuated and patients were transported to another hospital far from danger zone.

I highly doubt that anyone would think that the news is entertainment. of course there are parts of the news that are if there is a cooking segment or something like that which could be shown any day of the year.

sorry it is not either of them
it is sad.
always sad
all they talk about is the bad the very bad stuff that goes on..almost never the good stuff that goes on in the community.
why can't they talk about the good stuff...why..if they do maybe some of the bad stuff will go away..maybe...
why don't they put the pictures of sexual criminals on the daily news so children and females know who to stay away from??
and maybe even the drunk drivers that do NOT have their license any more...
and maybe the drug dealers faces too.
then maybe it would be entertaining and not sad like it is now.

Nowadays it's more a form of entertainment, because half the news is either extremely biased (ie.Fox), or they are over sensationalizing their content.

I watch evenings news programs for my local and nat'l news. Included in my 2 hrs. nightly are the editorial opimions and an occassional investigative report. CBS for local (we are very rural) and MSNBC for nat'l. I find these networks to be very fair and informative.
