Douglas Bader (WW2 fighter ace) says they do half a snap roll with a little downforce at the top. Another said they just do a slow roll fast. This had been a topic of great discussion in many an air force officers club.

I don't know but it isn't as intriguing as how they take off. Did you know that a fly jumps backward to take off? So if you want to catch a fly, you snatch at the air three inches behind the fly and you don't have to be real fast...it'll jump right into your hand. Same thing for swatting them. Look at how they're sitting and aim behind them.

look at a close-up of a fly. Their feet are like tiny suction cups. I know they are nasty, but they are truly aerial acrobats of the highest order.
