Well, being in unbearable agony wasn't my idea of keen entertainment so I opted for the epidural.

If my pregnant friend asked me if she should get an epi, I wouldn't force her but I would suggest that she keep an open mind.
Some people are completely against intervention (as they want an au naturel labor), and some people completely swear by the epi.
I will tell you my experience and you can make up your own mind. I went into labor expecting NOT to get an epidural. It was even on my birth plan--"No epidural!". Well, the minute my contractions started I was in so much pain I couldn't even walk or breathe regularly. Maybe I have a low threshold for pain...
So long story short, I got the epi and it was one of the most pleasant experiences of my labor. I don't think I could've continued with my delivery had I not gotten the epi. It helped me save some energy, that I would've lost while suffering in pain, for the pushing stage. So I'm glad I got the epidural.

My first child I had an epidural it was great they turned it off about an hour before delivery so i was not completely numb, my second child was emergency c-section and I was given epidual twice and 2 spinal blocks and barley worked. Then the last baby was with just demoral( there was no anesethologist that night) which was painful but when it was over i was able to move around. I probably would go natual if I had another baby but if I couldn't handle it I wouldn't hesitate to gt an epidual.

I think you should leave your options open. I personally went as long as I could before I had my epidural. It didn't take long though because I had back labor. With this delivery though I my leave my options open to just something through my IV. Get all the info you can on any available medicines that are out there to help during labor. Then weight the pros and cons with each one when deciding. Good Luck

ABSOLUTELY YES!!!!! I had my first 3 natural and after having the epidural with my fourth child, I could kick my self for not opting for it with all my deliveries. I had the best experience with it, my doctor gave me the epidural when I first got to the hospital and he turned it off right before I delivered. So basically all I felt was the pain from the pushing. I WAS WONDERFUL!!!

I went through 4 days of labor and the last day was absolutely crippling in pain. I was all set for natural birth and the finally I asked for something. I think it was exhaustion too that factored in my decision. Come to find out that the doctors had to do an emergency c-section because the baby was in distress. After the birth of my daughter they found that she would have never been able to come out because she was way too big and I have a malformed pelvis that prevented her from coming out. If she had been 5 lbs she would have came out, but she was over 9 lbs.
SO....... I recommend you hold out for as long as you can, then don't feel bad if you ask for it. It is an amazing pain but all worth it.

YES!! YES!! YES!! I definately recommend the epidural. It's the best thing ever envented for child birth! Go for it. It doesn't hurt at all. I was scared also, but they cleaned my back, and deadened the skin.. Then, put the needle in. It felt like a mosquito bite. I had mine in for 3 days, and it was great! I never even knew I was lying on it.

I have had four children. Three of them were done with no medication... certainly not an epidural. There was a lot of screaming involved. I had an epidural with one. IT WAS AWESOME! Didn't feel a thing! Doc said push.. I said "ok!"

I think I would. :) I had two without and one with. This last one was the big one so I was happy to have it. But it was painful to administer as well. I sat on the end of my bed with my feed propped on the dr. stool. they had me hug a pillow and hunch over and NOT MOVE. I was contracting while they did this. The worse part was the pain killer they put in first. They said it would feel like a bee sting. I've had many bees sting me and NONE felt like that! A few moments after they put in the pain med they put more pain meds deeper- which again hurt. I wasn't supposed to feel them stick the plastic catheter in my back but I wasn't completely numb. It stung quite a bit... but I knew if I moved I could be paralysed. I felt four "ticks" is what I would describe them as when they tapped it up each vertibre. After about ten mins I was kinda feeling tingly in my legs. Then numb. And then numb and itchy EVERYWHERE! I could still feel pain with my contractions but the dr. said it didn't have a chance to fully kick in when I had to push. But then again two other natural child births were quite painful and I wouldn't want to put anyone through that agony. :) So, I would opt to have it again at least with my next one because I want to compare. It was nice not to cry and scream when I was in delivery and to actually be happy and alert to what was going on around me. With my other two I barely even wanted to hold my babies. Of course- I did; but I was exhausted!

If you are pregnant which I am assuming you are when you go into labor and feel that pain, the question then would be would you recommend an epidural.
