I have a Mazda 6 04 and i learned about this mod to do on the airbox which takes out a few parts that was interupting the flow of air. A week or two after that the Check Engine light came on. I had it tested and the code said it was a "evap Leak". It is a known problem that the gas cap doesnt fully seal. But Im wondering if any of this could have any relation to the airbox mod.

You may have changed fuel/air mixture or vacumm pressure in Airbox and causing computer sensor to mistake this for leak. Or may be a hose is loose. I think you have to do a step diagnose for air leakage in system. Go step by step otherwise at the end if you dont find leak your even more confused.

no if you took out the silencer or added a intake it will not throw a code unless you unhooked a vacumn line. the gas cap is a known problem we have been having take it in we replace cap under warranty, but the airbox mod wont throw a code you might have a evap leak bring it in for smoke test, mazdas have a history of evap codes.

no, this mod is done on a lot of vehicles with no issues. It basically removes the silencer box from the intake track giving you a straight shot etc. etc.

the evap system is completely different from the intake system. Fix your gas cap with some petrolium jelly on the gasket, clear the code and try it again.
