Yes it is cruel to go so early. Thats why I constantly think about my inevitable future, death. We all die no matter what time in life it comes. Thats the sad reality and thats why I prepare for the next life.

Sorry to hear about your friend. These things have been happening on the sports fields.
What happens is that nobody suspects that a young guy in school, especially if he plays a sport regularly, has any kind of serious physical problem.
But sometimes they do. Usually a heart defect. Whatever it was, it would have shown up sooner or later - like he could be just going for a bike ride or a hike or even just sort of horsing around and it could have happened.
The autopsy will tell. My condolences...

When I was 18 I watched someone I had known since kindergarten collapse and die during a football game.
Middle of the third quarter, he just collapsed. Nobody thought anything of it. I mean, injuries happen all the time in football... But then the other team ran over to our sideline and kneeled down and started praying with our team. (Oh god it's almost 20 years later and I'm getting chills again.) That's when we started to worry.
But then the doctors in the middle of the field pulled out a Cardiac needle. Have you ever heard 5000 people gasp, moan and cry all at once? It will haunt you forever.
For 20 minutes he lay on the field. Finally they loaded him in a stretcher and took him away in an ambulance. He was dead.
We all went to bed that night mourning our friend...
Then the next day we found out he had been revived in the ambulance. He was ok. And he even went on to play football in college. As it turns out he had an under treated asthma problem. He couldn't get enough air and his heart stopped. With the right treatment he was perfectly ok.
(The game was finished the following Wednesday. We won.)

About 5 years ago when my son was playing varsity football, one of his teamates collapsed while dressing for football practice. He died shortly afterward and an autopsy revealed he had an enlarged heart. Some people have tried to say it was because of steroids, but I think they were jealous of him because he was an outstanding player. My son joined the local rescue squad to be able to not be so helpless if he is again in a situation like this.

I remember the ex-Rangers player Davie Cooper playing up to the age of 39 when he died suddenly of a brain hemorrhage. In fact, he and Charlie Nicholas - Old Firm rivals - were filming a football skills show, called 'Shoot' for Scottish Television, at Clyde’s Broadwood stadium in Cumbernauld when Davie suddenly collapsed. He's still sadly missed. My sympathy is with Phil's family.
