Constipation is very common during pregnancy. Non-pharmacological treatment is the method of choice.....make sure you are drinking LOTS of fluids, eating lots of fibre (metamucil is a great idea - if you take the pills make sure you drink even more water or else they can CAUSE constipation) and exercise (walking is great exercise during pregnancy). If you are taking a supplement that is high in iron, speak with your ob/gyn about decreasing the iron (it can be very constipating). Stool softeners (docusate calcium and docusate sodium) are sometimes used if other methods have failed, however discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist first. DO NOT USE A LAXATIVE (senna is a laxative.....even though its an herbal product it is NOT rec. for use during pregnancy!!!)

I HIGHLY recommend you drink prune juice everyday. When I would take my prenatal vitamins I would get constipation, but then I also started drinking prune juice so the constipation went away. I would say to start out with half a glass everyday, but if that doesn't quite work then drink a whole glass. I personally think it's better rather than to take laxatives. THIS REALLY WORKS!

Dulcolax Suppository Pregnancy

Anything that provides a lot of fiber. Unpeeled apples, prunes, wheat toast, granola.

I wouldn't take any over-the-counter medications. Just try to keep things as natural as possible. Keep in mind that constipation IS a common complaint of pregnant women so you are not alone! Just remember to drink lots of water to hydrate your body and eat more high-fiber foods. You can't prevent it, but you can help your digestion along with extra water and extra fiber. Good luck!

For immediate relief - take 1 Dulcolax suppository. Works within minutes.

For ongoing relief - make sure that you're drinking plenty of water. Drink as much as you can - babies use up a lot.

I would also suggest up the fiber, but I had horrible morning sickness so it wasn't a possibility. Also, if you don't think the Benefiber chewables are gross, those are ok to take too.

Metamucil. It is merely extra fiber going into your system and is not harmful. If you are opposed to that, try apricots, prunes, or cold milk. Also, don't forget to drink plenty of water. Fiber gets stuck in your system and can actually make you MORE constipated if it is not flushed out with water.

All the other answers so far are good, but if you've already tried all of that, my doctor said I could take Metamucil sparingly (no more than 1 per day). I would still check with your doctor before taking anything though.

My Doc told me to take Colace.. And boy did I take it.. I took 2 pills once a day.. Wal Mart has a brand that isn't so expensive. That is also what they give you if you go into the hospital on bed rest. It works wonders!
