They probably used to sit in their mom's laps. As cars have become more technical so have carseats. I remember sitting in my dad's front seat shifting the gears in his car when I was 6. Now they have to be 12 before they can even sit in the front seat (because of Air Bags). Not to mention that you have to be 6 years old or 55" tall before they can even come out of the car seats. Wow how things have changed in twenty some odd years.

There's no car seat in the country where I come from. Babies usually is hold on mommy's lap. Bigger kids can sit on their own and wearing seatbelts.
It's no need also because most families have full-time nanny (so the baby can sit on nanny's lap while mommy's driving) or personal driver (so mommy can hold the baby). But there's definetely no car seat.
I sit on my parents' lap when they're driving - They have to drive me around before I'd go to sleep.

Held them on their laps probably. But remember, cars have really only been around since the very early 1900's and that was only for the rich and famous. I think for the most part, mommies didn't drive anywhere for quite some time. They just carried their babies.

They sat on people's laps, or they were put in baby carriers (the kind you carry with you). We used to have a single belt across the lap, or none at all. That's why, to this day, I still throw my hand across the passenger seat to protect that person from flying forward when I have to stop fast :)

The older style port-a-cribs (not pack 'n play/playyards) could actually be set up in a car. My parents drove across the US with me in the back this way.

I think they just would lay a blanket down and let them roll around like a 2 liter in the back

My mom said if she was driving, she'd lay me on the front seat and hold onto me with one arm while driving with the other. I'm amazed that I'm alive!!

In the covered wagon days, they were heavily swaddled and held or placed in baskets. In the more recent "old days" most mothers held their children. They were not to work or drive back then so it wasn't difficult.
