I was distressed to learn my favorite local art supply store will be shutting its doors soon. Why? Because people are buyingmore now from the Internet and in chain stores like Michael's. This leaves no room for little quality oriented family owned businesses to survive.
Probably we'll discover they have all closed down, and then the stores like Michael's will go bankrupt too, leaving us with nothing.

yes, small stores have no chance to compete with huge mega stores, and are closing down. That's why so many American towns all look the same....dead downtown cores, lots of generic strip malls, gas stations, huge parking lots, crappy fast food joints, and generic suburbs - or urban sprawl.

Zelda,

It is all about our economy. People are stretched to the limit, and in an effort to save money, shop at stores like Wal-Mart, while Mom and Pop stores close their doors. I am disturbed that so many of our jobs are outplaced overseas. Recently, I spoke with customer service re: my laptop and the person was in INDIA!

This all needs to change to make our country and economy stronger! I rarely shop at Wal-Mart now, because everything is made in China. When Sam Walton, founder of W-Mart was alive, everything! was Made In U.S.A. No more. Each of needs to think about our values, and use our energy and money wisely. Want more Wal-Marts, keep going there and that is ALL we will have.

That has nothing to do with "mono-culture" and everything to do with competition and big-box stores.
