Peach baskets were the first hoops, and they were hung up just as they were, complete with the bottom of the basket in place. Then someone decided the game would go a little quicker if the bottom was cut out, so that's what they did, and eventually it evolved to the hoop as we know it today.

E-peach baskets! by james naismith they had guys on ladders to get the ball (soccer ball is what they used) out of the basket!

It was buckets. Because they didn't have holes in the bottom, someone had to retreive the ball wit a ladder every time until someone decided to sut a hole in the bottom.
