the difference between formal and cocktail is more than just length. if the long dress would be appropriate for a prom or gala or ball, then it is too formal to be appropriate in the cocktail setting.
cocktail attire can be a smart suit, a tea lentgh dress, or a long gown w/o too much detailing -like- sequins, gathers, trains, etc.
if you would wear it to a business dinner or a company christmas party, you should be ok. if not, you will probably stand out at the party.
hope this helps:D

It depends on how formal the dress is. There are plenty of dresses that are long, but not formal enough to be called an evening gown.
Cocktail attire is usually a knee length to mid calf dress. To get some ideas about what what's appropriate, browse these pages, or just call and ask the host/hostess who is throwing the party.

Cocktail attire is generally short dressy dresses or pants with ornate tops. Long dresses are usually considered formal attire. But, since people are wearing all lengths of dresses these days, you could wear a long dress if it is not considered to be a formal.

Cocktail attire is considered formal to semi-formal. This can include all different lengths of dresses, but typically refer to dresses that fall between above the knee to "tea length" (mid-calf). Generally, you'll want to stay away from anything too flashy or sparkly and definitely no floor-length gowns. A good suggestion might be a black knee length dress with nice jewelry and a clutch.

Here's something I would probably choose if I were going to a cocktail party:

Usually cocktail means formal but shorter dresses. If you wear a longer dress, you will probably not be dressed appropriately. Try a fun color like pink, green, or blue. Some dresses even have assymetrical and uneven hems that look really cool. Try a dress that is to the knee or shorter. Have fun at the parT!!!!

A long dress is not inappropriate at all. Picture what they where at the EMMY Awards. A long sexy, body hugging dress would be perfect!

You can still be sexy and nothave to show cleavage and legs. It is a more classy attire.
