Does he have a hobby? Is he a collector? perhaps you can get presents that reflect his interests in sports, books, music?
Does he collect coins? There are a number of interesting coins out that you can get for him. These are collectors items that will rise in value as the years go on. Silver dollars are a good investment.
They may not be "cool" but, they will be worth more in a few years long after the CD's are cracked and he gets tired of watching the same DVD over and over again.
Just a suggestion.

sounds like you're buying him too many presents.
But if you're out of 'gift' ideas, go for experiences.
Take him somewhere he'd enjoy going. Perhaps a concert, or a monster truck rally, or backpacking the grand canyon, or a day skiing, or whatever he's into. Don't think 'romantic'- that's a girl thing. Do something for HIM.

Make him something yourself. Draw him a picture, or write him a poem. Glue stuff together that shows him how much you love him. If that doesn't work, get him a nice pocket knife.
