Because it's a distraction and students can use them to text inappropriate things, such as answers on tests. They have also been used for such things as taking pictures of people in the locker room and then putting it online.

Oh, please! You really don't know the answer to that?
What would you do if the teacher DID let you have your cell phone out? Would you simply place it on your desk and not look at it, not use it, not call up answers, not talk to other kids, etc.etc.etc.
Well, that's the reason teachers don't let you have your cell phones out. You are supposed to be paying attention to the work in class, to the demonstrations and lectures the teacher is giving, and to be doing tests all by yourself, without assistance from the internet or the cute guy across the room.

Oh I KNOW. My school is soooooo strict on that it's unbelievable. It's just a phone, and making them illegal only encourages kids to secretly call and text their friends even more. It's gotten to the point that if a teacher sees a cell phone (even if the kid isn't talking on it) they are supposed to confiscate it and send the kid to the superintendent.
Yeah it's a distraction to have people talking on phones in class, but if the kid has the phone turned off it should not be a big deal. The school system is completely idiotic, and do a lot of things for no reason. And remember that millions of kids are sympathizing with you.

In Illinois it is actually a law that outlaws cell phones in the classroom (I believe), but for other reasons...text messaging during class could be used for cheating, ringing phones cause distraction, it is not like you can answer it during class anyways and if there is an emergency than the school will let you know. I understand why people hate it, but I guess there are enough distractions in school.

You are in school; it's not social hour. I survived my high school days very nicely without a cell phone. I graduated in 2003, not that long ago. Turn off your phone during class and pay attention.
In college, if your cell phone goes off during an exam, your exam will be confisicated and you will be given a zero, which means you fail the course.

Because our tax dollars are paying for you and your fellow classmates to get an education, not for you to yap on your cell phones. Just because you have a toy doesn't mean you have the right to play with it wherever and whenever you like. Grow up!
