I do not allow kids to use cell phones in my classroom because if everyone were talking on cell phones they would not learn anything.

If students are texting others they cannot pay attention to the class.

Some students have used text messages to cheat on tests. Others have actually taken photos of the tests and then sent them to their friends.

Cell phones can trigger bombs should there be one planted in a school. Students do not understand this and when we are evacuated for threats they try to use their phones to call their friends/parents and do not understand the danger.

I do not see any reason why a student should use their cell in class. However, yesterday I did allow a girl to make a call. We were doing a group project and we needed information from an absent student. She quickly called the missing girl and got the info that her group needed.

Generally, cells are not helpful in a learning environment. Occasionally they can be helpful for something.

All of the answers so far are legitimate. I would like to add that cell phones can also be used as cameras and many students have taken pictures of their notes, or review material at home then brought the phone out during a test and proceeded to view the pictures enabling them to cheat.
