MY guinea pig just died ten minuted ago... and to me it was very unexpected even though he has been having problems for the past three days. Three days ago he stopped eating. My mom took him to the vet on that day and they pulled something that was stuck on his teeth. We thought that was the solution to the probelm, but Frederick still would not eat. The next day we took him to the vet and got x-rays . They said his cecum sack was much larger than it is supposed to be, so they gave him a shot to help his digestive system move (he also was not pooping) and a recipe for a "soup that I can feed him" Today Frederick was very relaxed... I also knew he was going to die... but I didn't want to tell my mom because she is very attached to him. Well anyway, today when my mom was gone Frederick started wheezing and twitching really badly. Five minutes later he died. What I want to know is to have some idea of what happened to Frederick. Do all guinea pigs die like this? Everything I thought that

HI

Aww Sorry ohear of your Poor Guinea Pig...

First.. if you plan to get a new one..

Read up and do your research.. either purchase new equipment or sterilize the old stuff.. I suggest a ne feed dish and water bottle entirely.

G Pigs really are pretty hardy... but there are many things that can go wrong

guinea pigs digest much of their food in the cecum and colon (large intestine) which are at the end of the digestive tract. The cecum, a large thin-walled sac located at the junction of the small and large intestine, contains up to 65 percent of gastrointestinal (GI) contents. Within the cecum, bacteria and protozoa aid digestion of foods taken in by the guinea pig. Fiber is needed for these bacteria and protozoa to stay in balance and function properly. Fiber also aids in maintaining normal GI motility. Without fiber the gastrointestinal tract slows down, resulting in subsequent changes in the cecum pH, fermentation, and bacterial population. With time these changes in the intestinal tract environment can lead to indigestion.

Then I suggest you locate a new VET. Make sure you ask if they have EXPEIENCE with Cavies, Rabbits and Guinea Pigs,, not just if they treat them.

You see.. if a Pigs intestines become Blocked you have a serious problem that if not fixed will end in death.

I would suspect that if he was not having stool (poop) that this is what happened and that the toxins building in his body were to great and it effected his other vital systems.

Its sad.. it does happen with G Pigs.. But I am a little surprised your Vet did not treat it more aggressively.

Well
Again

Sorry... WIsh you and Your Mom well

Did the vet give it a shot of antibiotics? If so, that may be the reason it died.
Guinea pigs are notorious about handing antibiotics poorly. The problem is that these antibiotics also kill the “good” bacteria that reside in the pig’s cecum and are essential to proper digestion. If these bacteria are killed, the pig soon succumbs to toxic products that accumulate in the intestine.
Not eating is extremely serious, as your pets' system will shut down with dire consequences. After as little as 16 to 20 hours of anorexia, liver cells begin to break down and from then on, your guinea pig will only get worse.

I got those 2 answers from searching on yahoo.http://www.caviesgalore.com/faq/medical.html

I hope it answers some questions. It would seem the 3 days of not eating was just too much for it to handle. I'm sorry for your loss.

Guinea Pigs need special diets and they need vitamin C. There is some drops you can get to put in their water for this. They are just about the only animal that needs vitamin C. My friend used to give her Guinea Pig "Tang" in the water bottle every other fill up. This is all I know. Look at a pet store for a book on Guinea Pig care if you choose to get another one.

i never had a guinea pig. it seems he had something else wrong with him that the vets couldnt find out (frankly, some vets arent very caring - notice how everytime you took him there they found something new that they couldve found all in the first day you brought him) .....i once found a pigeon that fell from a tree in the rain and hurt her wing. i took her to the nearest animal clinic and because i couldnt pay for the clinic to take care of it the vet lady "put it to sleep" that night and told me it died the next day.
im not stupid i knew she killed it. I have vet friends who told me later on some vets are like that.

sorry, thats all i can say about this....

Sorry to hear about your Guinea Pig. But most of them only live about 4 to 5 years. You don't say how old yours was so it could have just died from old age.

we used to have guinea pigs and they always died.. we have had four guinea pigs died.. (like when one died, we went and bought another one) after the fourth one died we realized that we probably should try getting something different. our guinea pigs never ate either. we never knew why and still don't. i would suggest try getting something different instead of a guinea pig next time if you do.
