Looks like you know this person but do not know his marital status, and i also get the understanding that you are not comfortable enough to ask this question directly. It also conveys that the relationship is very superficial hence the question is open here. If there is no trust then its not worth finding out if anyone is married or not, this has to end.
Another source could be to hire a service who can do this job, but it will cost you a lot of money.

I was once dating a guy that said he was divorced but, a friend of his told me that he was still legally married so, I called the court and asked if there was anything on file and they told me that there was no record of divorce. I thinkl marriage records are public file just go to the cour house and ask.

If you are living nearby you can go to the city hall of records
and just look up the name.
Google 'em...Sometimes there will be a wife's name along
with any children's name.
Ask!!
