A broom closet? Or maybe a pantry that once had shelves in it?

these closets were for clothes, which back then they didn't have as many as we do now. There was not a rod that went side to side but hooks that clothes hung on facing out. I had these types of closets in my old house and had them enlarged.

knock on the back wall to see if its hollow.
have a look from the room behind to see if there's a logical reason.
maybe housing the hot water cylinder?
if not it may have been boarded out for some reason.
Could just be a broom cupboard.
maybe look at the neighbors house if theirs is the same.

It sounds like it was a shelved closet or it could have had hooks spaced about two ft. apart for coats.
