this is the first year that I am living in a house and I am not sure what I am supposed to do? Does it matter either way?

Congrats on getting a house.

By the time the first snow falls your lawn should have already been relatively dormant for awhile. It's length through any winter has nothing to do with its survival, and if it's a healthy lawn now, I suspect with proper care in Spring it will green up again, and be ready for cutting.

Snow does not damage grass. Ice and extreme freezing kills it back. It will come back in the Spring. If it's too long, it will leave more dead grass to rake in the Spring, since it comes back from the roots.

Cut it with a mulching mower. The grass mulch will benefit your lawn in the spring and it will green up faster.

Leave it longer! It protects the root and will help it to grow back in the spring.
