Depends on what your ancestry is. If you are of english/irish/scottish extraction, you may be able to utilze the Sons of the Revolution, if you think you have ancestry dating to the revolution. However, let me warn you that this is a very time consuming process, but there are many people who do this as a hobby and it might help to start with your local chapter. If you don't have proper documentation (birth certificates, etc,) then you might be in trouble. If you know the birth place of your ancestor, then you can contact their hall of records to help locate marriage, death or birth certificates
