Peer review (known as refereeing in some academic fields) is a process of subjecting an author's scholarly work or ideas to the scrutiny of others who are experts in the field. It is used primarily by publishers, to select and to screen submitted manuscripts, and by funding agencies, to decide the awarding of monies for research. The peer review process is aimed at getting authors to meet the standards of their discipline and of science generally. Publications and awards that have not undergone peer review are likely to be regarded with suspicion by scholars and professionals in many fields.

Probably in your case it just means that your classmates will read and critique your work.

A peer reviewed article is an article that has been reviewed by others in the field of study prior to publication. This "system" is used by the scientific community so as to weed out kooks, frauds, errors, sloppy science, and so on. It is supposed to ensure quality in research, and usually works well.

If you're still in school a "peer review article" is more or less just a book report.Unlike a book report, however, your classmates get to comment on your work.
In the professional world a peer review article is a much scarier thing!
