I thought about a hermit crab, but i don't know what kind of aquarium setup they need. I really don't know of any other pet crustaceans.

Any help would be great.

Hi

I see many ideas out here so far... Some good ...some not so good.

You want something small for a reason.. Id guess easy to care for.. wont die easily, not tooo expensive,, easy to feed and find the food for it like at a local store... and so on...

Sooooooooooo

Fish of course..but pretty boring and actually if you end up with a tank/water issue can be time consuming.

Turtles are good.. not too expensive... you can handle them, can get food at any per shop , walmart etc..

Small snakes like Corn snakes are ok as well,..but food can be harder to get.. youd want to check that out first

You can get tarantulas and things like Madagascar hissing cockroaches if you like those things... easy to care for.. but not all that cuddly!

Lizards, small ones can be ok.. but you do need to make sure you have a place to get the food and read up on them first.

Mice.. they are ok but tempermental
Same for Gerbils

Hamsters are way more relaxed,, cute , you can hold them,, play with them.. cheap tp feed and food is everyhwere.. grocery stores etc... Be careful if you get 2 they are not opposite sex as they breed quickly!

Birds... not the best as far as care sincec they are sensitive to many things like drafts, cleaners, smoke, etc...

Rabbits and Guinea Pigs are good but both require more time and space than you Porb want to deal with.

Whatever you decide to get.. Be certain you read up on it first,.Makes ure there is a place to get its food before you buuy it and have everything set up for it before you bring it home..
AND Make SURE you locate a VET that will not only treat the animal you are getting but knows how to treat it before you get it..

THe time to be looking for a VET is NOT after its sick... Also just because a VET says he will treat it does not mean he know HOW.. so ASK.

Good Luck
Take your time

hey, well as you want a small pet, and want to be able to pet it, and which is easy to care for, i would suggest maybe a hamster, there small, cute, and easy to look after, and there freindly when that get to know you, i wouldnt suggest a guinea pig as they are slightly bigger and ive read that they can get quite viciuos at times, and i dont think your daughter will be to upset if she got a hamster, as there very simmeler to the guinea pig. hamsters are also good, if you need to go away for a couple days, just make sure that there food bowl is full and the water is full... there very independant, and really dont need much taken care for, llthough you have to put in the cage some hay, or wool and have to change that every couple weeks, so i think the hamster would be ideal for your first pet :) hope this helps p.s sorry about the spelling mistakes i have made, lol :)

A chinchilla is a great indoor pet. No odor, easy to take care of and very soft and cute! Chinchillas need a bunny-sized cage or a ferret cage. Also small space to be able to run around. They need special chinchilla-safe food (Petco has it), water, dust bath and a running wheel.

We have 2 cats, and they don't even know about our chinchilla because there is no odor!

Rats make great pets. They are social animals, so if you decide on rats, make sure to get two, three, or four. I had eight, which was a bit much. Keep in mind that they need your attention. They love being taken out for playtime, so make sure you have at least an hour per day to spend with them out of their cage.

Rats are neat because of the following reasons:
1. They can stay in a cage and not mess up your entire house.
2. They are fun to watch (they jump up on the sides of the cage, hang upside down from the top of the cage, wrestle with each other, groom each other, etc.)
3. They're very loving. Boys like to be handled more than girls, but even the girls like to sit on your lap occasionally and get pets from you.
4. They're not very expensive (unless they get sick).
5. They love being taken out to play. (Just make sure they can't get into trouble- eating wires, escaping, etc.)
6. They're really cute.
7. They live for about 2-3 years, which is good if you're not looking for a huge commitment (but bad because you get so attached to them).

Please, before getting any pet, read up on them. Not just by asking people on Yahoo Answers, but by looking at websites and books about those particular animals. You want to make sure you're getting the right kind of pet for your personality, lifestyle, needs, etc.

doesnt seem like you know much about taking care of pets. I'd say other lizards are good pets for you but theyre more high maintenance than you think. they need a certain amount of lighting, water temperature, certain amount of space....its tough for a new person.

hermit crabs are easy. just need a tank, some pebbles and water, somewhere in the tank they can hide under, food of course and a good room temperatured place for them.

other good small pets that are much easier to care for are: bunnies, turtles (they live long and easy to take care of), hamster, mice (if youre not bothered by them), chinchillas (i think theyre beautiful pets), ferrets (fun little guys, just not legal in all states), birds (parakeets are cool but parrots are amazing animals, you wouldnt even know it)

for other small indoor animals and how to care for them you should go to the link in sources below

I used to have Russian hamsters. Very cute, neat brown(or gray, its sort of a genetic mutation i think, i had one with a gray coat and she wasn't weird or anything) coat with a long black line going down the middle of the back. Get a boy and a girl(neutered and spayed, i once have 11 hamsters at once!!!), 'cause boys together get all territorial and battle. If by any chance they do have little ones, DO NOT touch them untill they look the same as their parents only mini.

I have a russian tortoise. He is really easy to take care of. He lives in a dry tank, with a water bowl. everyday i feed him a handful of salad (no spinach), once a week i give him a bath in the sink. He loves to wander around the house, and when i take him outside he likes to dig in the ground. He needs a sun lamp, and enjoys basking under the heat of the lamp or the real sun. I clean his cage about every other week. I would definantly recommend getting a tortoise.
