you should always close your open ports(log off and shut down) when you leave your computer for long periods.
However if you use java or other apps i wont note you can be hacked at any time .
Many people even with wireless connections have no idea that someone else is using their network.
I do it all the time.
Its best to shutdown yor PC when not in use.
There are programs to monitor idle PC's and whether or not there are open ports.

Well most people I know do as you are doing but if the internet is left on it is accessable to hackers and other things. It only takes a minute to disconnect when not in use so I say better safe than sorry.
Also I will put computer on stand by and at night I shut it completely down. It's best for its protection. A storm or power outage can happen anytime. I also have a power strip with a battery pack. If power goes out while in use or when you arent there it uses its battery to keep it going and will beep ever so often until you get there to turn it off. Maybe none of this is necessary but I had an expandable phone system that plugs in and the whole thing quit working after a storm . Good thing that wasn't near the price of a computer.
Well hope some of these is helpful :o)

As most everyone else here as said, as long as you have an antivirus program and a firewall on the computer and kept properly updated, you should be fine walking away for long periods of time. Some of these programs (ex.: ZoneAlarm) even have special settings that increase your security when you leave the computer unattended (or can completely block the internet if you think your computer is being attacked).
Just remember that if your system is running Windows that you should probably reboot the computer at least once a week (or whenever you notice the computer seems to be taking longer to load things up).

I also have RR and my computer is on all day. I only shut it down when I go to bed, or if I'm going to be gone for any length of time.

You should have running firewall and antivirus and antispy. But if you don't work for a longer period, it is best to shut down the machine.
